Why You’re Still Getting Breakouts as an Adult

11 June, 2025

by Jenna Curcio

Your skin grew up. Your zits didn’t.

Thought you’d graduate high school and leave breakouts behind? Same. But adult acne didn’t get the memo. It’s showing up more than ever—especially for women in their 20s, 30s, even 40s. And while it might look like the teenage stuff, it usually runs deeper, heals slower, and laughs in the face of your old drugstore spot treatment.

So what gives? Let’s break down what’s really going on with adult acne, and how to manage it without spiraling.

First, Why Is This Happening?

Adult acne isn’t just a teen thing rebranded. It's often sneakier, deeper, and tied to a handful of fun grown-up stressors like:

  • Hormones (thanks, cycle)

  • Stress (see: your inbox)

  • Skin barrier issues

  • Haircare or makeup that clogs pores

  • That one salad dressing you love (yes, really — some foods can be triggering)

Zits from adult acne usually show up around the chin, jawline, or cheeks and can be inflamed, painful, or just there for weeks.

But Wait—Could It Be Something Else?

Not all breakouts are technically acne. If you’re dealing with redness, flare-ups, or bumps that don’t really behave like regular pimples, you could be working with rosacea (which often gets mistaken for acne).

Okay, So What Do I Do?

Keep it calm, clean, and consistent. Here’s a cheat sheet:

  • Don’t freak out and over-exfoliate. You can’t scrub away adult acne (believe me, I’ve tried).

  • Use non-comedogenic everything. That includes your SPF, makeup, and even conditioner.

  • Add a gentle treatment. Look for ingredients like sulfur, azelaic acid, or salicylic acid — just don’t layer them all at once.

  • Support your skin barrier. Hydration and barrier-focused products help your skin tolerate treatments better.

  • Talk to a derm. If the breakouts won’t budge, you might need a prescription to calm things down.

Real Talk

There’s no perfect fix, but there is a sweet spot where your skin feels chill and you don’t think about it 24/7. Getting there just takes a little detective work (and maybe letting go of that TikTok toner you knew was too harsh).

You're not doing anything wrong. Adult acne happens to literally all of us — even the glowy people. Give your skin some grace. And please don’t pop that really one on your jaw <3
