Clearing a breakout is hard enough. But the dark spots, red marks, and weird texture it leaves behind? That’s a whole other ball game.
Whether you’re dealing with dark spots, lingering redness, or actual scarring, knowing what you’re working with helps you treat it faster without wasting your time or money.
Consider this your cheat sheet to all things acne marks. Shall we?
First: What Qualifies as a Post-Acne Mark?
Basically, it’s anything your breakout leaves behind. Most often:
-
Dark spots (aka hyperpigmentation or Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
-
Redness (Post-Inflammatory Erythma)
-
Textural scarring (indents or raised marks)
And yes, you can have more than one at once. Love that for us!
1. PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
Looks like: Brown, gray, or purplish flat spots — especially on deeper skin tones.
Why it happens: Inflammation triggers melanin. The darker your skin, the more it lingers.
To fade it:
-
Brightening ingredients: niacinamide, alpha arbutin, licorice root.
-
Gentle exfoliants: mandelic acid or PHAs.
-
Daily SPF (yes, we’re gonna keep saying it)
-
Try: Blemish Control & Exfoliating Serum for fading spots + smoothing texture.
2. PIE (Post-Inflammatory Erythema)
Looks like: Flat pink or red spots, mostly on lighter skin tones.
Why it happens: Broken blood vessels from inflammation.
To calm it:
-
Soothers: niacinamide, centella, ceramides.
-
Red LED therapy [link to other article here] (or lasers if you’re working with a derm).
-
SPF (again, even indoors).
-
Try: Chamomile Jelly Cleanser — ultra-gentle and barrier-supporting.
3. Acne Scars
Looks like: Indented or raised spots where skin texture has changed.
Why it happens: Deeper inflammation = damaged collagen.
To treat it:
-
At the derm or esthetician: microneedling, lasers, chemical peels.
-
At home: retinoids, gentle acids.
-
No picking, ever. Pinky promise.
-
Try: Blemish Control & Exfoliating Serum to support skin between pro treatments.
