Body Breakouts Are Definitely a Thing — Here’s How to Manage

Let’s talk about body acne — aka bacne, chest acne, shoulder zits, the whole crew. It shows up without warning, overstays its welcome, and doesn’t care that you have a strappy dress to wear Friday.

It’s common, it’s manageable, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.

 

Why Do We Get Body Acne?

Body acne happens when pores get clogged with oil, sweat, dead skin cells, or residue from products. Mix in tight clothes or a post-gym Uber ride home (without a shower in sight), and breakouts find their way in.

Common triggers:

  • Workout gear + sweat + friction

  • Not showering right after sweating

  • Hair or body products that clog pores

  • Fragrance-heavy lotions or body washes

  • Backpack straps or anything that rubs

Bacne and chest acne love areas with high oil production and heat — think back, chest, shoulders, butt, sometimes even the neck.


Before You Treat It — Make Sure It Is Body Acne

Not every bump is a pimple. You could be dealing with:

  • Fungal acne: tiny, itchy bumps that often cluster on your back

  • Keratosis pilaris: those rough, chicken skin patches on arms or thighs (Soft Services Buffing Bar to the rescue for that)

  • Heat rash: red dots from, well, heat

If nothing’s working, it’s worth checking in with a derm.


Let’s Cut to the Chase, Here’s How to Treat Body Acne

Here’s the low-effort, high-impact breakdown:

1. Use an Acne-Safe Body Wash

Swap anything heavily fragranced for something that clears pores and supports your skin barrier.

Look for:

  • 2% salicylic acid (clears dead skin + oil)

  • Benzoyl peroxide (fights acne bacteria)

  • Sulfur (calms inflammation)

Try: Chamomile Jelly Cleanser for gentle daily use in the shower —even on sensitive, breakout-prone skin.

Let it sit for a minute before rinsing. Skip the scrubs and loofahs.


2. Shower ASAP Post-Workout

Stop plopping on your bed and scrolling on TikTok the second you get home from Pilates. Sweat, heat, and friction = breakout central. No time to shower? Wipes and clean clothes will do in a pinch.

Focus on rinsing areas where you get bacne or chest acne most often. Loose, breathable clothes help too.


3. Spot Treat Strategically

4. Watch Your Hair + Body Products

If your conditioner is hanging out on your back in the shower—there’s your answer.

Avoid:

  • Coconut oil

  • Isopropyl myristate

  • Thick butters or waxes

5. Exfoliate — But Gently

Body exfoliation can help keep breakouts at bay, just don’t go full loofah warrior.

Stick to 2–3x per week with gentle acids like:

  • Salicylic acid

  • Glycolic or lactic acid

  • Urea or PHA-based lotions


6. Support Skin From the Inside, Too

  • Hydrate and eat balanced meals (watch dairy/sugar if those flare things up for you)

  • Sleep and stress matter (yep, cortisol can spike oil production)


Body Acne Takes Time

Most people see results in 4–6 weeks if they’re consistent. Cystic spots or post-breakout marks can take longer, but you’re still making progress. Keep it gentle, steady, and barrier-first.


TL;DR

Bacne and chest acne are super common, super normal, and very treatable. Stay consistent with a body wash that works for your skin, skip harsh scrubs, and give it time.
